Each season we will bring in guests to run specific workshops.  If you'd like us to put on a workshop or would be interested in putting one on yourself, please do get in touch.

Keep Taking the Tablets
From Tues 10 Nov  |  10 am  - 12pm  |    £20 for 5-week course


A set of five weekly sessions initially aimed at the over 50’s. The sessions are designed to familiarise the attendees with the basic operation of an Android or i-Pad tablet from the initial power on to ‘surfing’ the internet. The focus will be on using a tablet to keep in contact with friends and family, for sport and hobby applications and to become confident in using the new technology for personal, social and community interests.


Tablets will be available for use during the course, which will be limited to a maximum of 8 people on a first come first served basis.

Storytelling with Shadows
Tues 17 Nov  |  1.30pm  - 4pm  |    FREE


Come and join local Artist Anne Errington and partake in using and making shadow puppets to tell stories.

Rigid Heddle Weaving
Tues 24 Nov  |  10am  - 4pm  |    £15 (9 places available)

Learn to weave on these practical, versatile looms and create a piece to weaving to take home.  We will get creative with colour and texture as well as learning some of the basic principles of weaving. 


Looms will be provided  and people are also welcome to bring their own loom if they have one but are asked to contact the tutor via Catstrand for a discussion about their loom in advance of the workshop.

Learn to Spin Yarn with a Spinning Stick
Tues 12 Jan  |  1pm  - 4pm  |    £7 (9 places available)

An amazing yet simple way to spin yarn that can be done anywhere, using nothing more than a 4” long piece of dowel.  Learn this technique even if you have never used a hand spindle or spinning wheel to spin yarn.

Windows 10 Introduction Course
From Tues 10 Nov  |  1pm  - 3pm  |    £20 for 5-week course


A course based on gaining an understanding and use of Windows 10. This will be limited to a maximum of 8 people on a first come first served basis. Bring your own laptop if you have one with Windows 10 installed.


Reduced cost of £30 if attending both courses.

The Lowland Clearances: Scotland's Silent Revolution

Everyone has heard of the Highland Clearances but little is said of the Lowland Clearances yet they changed the face of places such as Galloway and we live with the consequences today.


With the aid of recordings, Peter Aitchison and Andrew Cassell, authors of the book and radio series on the Lowland Clearances, will relate the story of Scotland's 'Silent Revolution' and discuss the implications for Galloway.


This event is organised by The Glenkens Story history project and is part of Book Week Scotland 2015.

Needle Felt - Make 3D Figures
Tues 8 Dec  |  1pm  - 4pm  |    £7

Create 3D figures with Needle felt techniques.  Needle felt is simple to learn and great fun.  It is ideal for creating 3D pieces from wool fibres.  Make a 3D animal or other figure which you can take home.
